DOWNHILLBOUND

DownhillBound is the solo electronic project of Jon Matthews, a musician, recording, and mix engineer from the North Coast of the South West of England, UK. With a career spanning over three decades, Jon draws inspiration from electronic pioneers such as Aphex Twin, Depeche Mode, Goldie, and Gary Numan, blending intricate sound design with melodic sensibilities to create a distinctive sonic identity.

Jon began creating electronic music at just eleven years old, experimenting on a Commodore Amiga with programs like OctaMED. His early exposure to a wide range of electronic styles laid the foundation for his musical vision. Life eventually led him to focus on recording and producing other artists, where he developed his skills in studio engineering, live sound, and demo production for local bands and solo performers.

In 2017, Jon returned to his own music with the release of If It’s Too Loud…, an album originally created in 1997 and carefully remastered. This was followed by the A Mixxed Bag EP and The Snowday EP, conceived during a week snowed in a small Devon village—demonstrating Jon’s ability to turn inspiration from everyday circumstances into music.

During 2021, Jon completed the “12 in 21” project, releasing a new track each month. For this series, he revisited the equipment and workflow of the 1990s, using C-Lab’s Notator ’93 on an Atari STe ’89 to capture the authentic sound and creative process of his early electronic work.

Alongside his personal projects, Jon continues to run his recording studio, offering professional production, recording, and mixing services to the local music community. Whether crafting his own electronic soundscapes or helping other artists realize their vision, Jon Matthews and DownhillBound represent a commitment to both artistic creativity and technical excellence.
